Civil Funeral Celebrant

A very special funeral ceremony

When a loved one dies it’s a very painful and distressing time. There are, inevitably, decisions to be made about the funeral. Perhaps the most important one of all is…

What kind of funeral do you really want?

Many people find their personal preferences are best met within a Civil Funeral ceremony. This can include readings, hymns, prayers, poems, music, and personal recollections – anything that family and friends think would recognise and mark the passing of someone very special to them.

As a professionally trained Funeral Celebrant, I will help you create a truly personal funeral ceremony that is exactly as you wish it to be.

What is a Civil Funeral?

A Civil Funeral is driven by the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family, not by the beliefs of the person conducting the funeral.

Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. The choice may be influenced by religion, culture, cost and personal preferences – or by any requests of the deceased.
An increasing number of people in the UK are now choosing a Civil Funeral ceremony. This can include religious elements of whatever faith, or no religious content at all, as well as other elements that together reflect the wishes of everyone involved.

With the help and support of a professional Civil Funeral Celebrant, the most appropriate and meaningful ceremony for this final act of love and respect can be created. It enables you to mark their life in a way that means the most to those present, and includes the wishes of the person you have come to say farewell to.

A Civil Funeral Ceremony is fitting for either a cremation or burial and can be held at a variety of locations, with exception of churches and religious buildings

The Role of a Celebrant

Funeral Celebrant is a formal term applied to members of a group of non-clergy professionals who are committed to preparing and delivering high quality funeral ceremonies. The objective is remember and celebrate the life of the person who had died.

Celebrants work alongside funeral directors and funeral venues (usually a crematorium) to assist in making one of the most difficult days of your life a little more bearable.

The Celebrant will arrange an initial meeting with you to explain what is involved and then plan the ceremony with you. You can discuss what you would like to be included in terms of music, poems, readings etc., as well as who you would like to be involved. Some people prefer the Celebrant to conduct the whole ceremony, others like to include contributions from family or friends of the deceased.

They will spend time talking with you and other relatives and friends, to ensure they are as familiar with your loved one as possible and can convey their story with compassion and feeling. The Celebrant will then create a draft ceremony, including the tribute (or eulogy), and will seek your final approval. Nothing will be said at the funeral which has not been approved.

After the ceremony, you will receive a copy of the full script – to keep and reflect on whenever you wish.
